Mathematics has been sitting still for quite long enough.

An equation can steer a boat. Change one line of a problem and everything underneath it may need rearranging. Take a route the answer key wasn’t expecting and you might still arrive quite correctly.

There’s a considerable amount going on in there.

I’m Matthew Rausch. I’m building LogNormal.

I wanted to get my hands on it.

When I was studying mathematics, I wanted somewhere to work through the difficult stuff. Try a step. Change my mind. Try another. Find out exactly where an argument came apart.

I could find explanations. I could find worked examples. What I couldn’t find was the digital place to actually do it—particularly once the mathematics became more advanced.

And much of the software I did find seemed remarkably uninterested in being software.

A question. A box. A tick. Next.

We’d given the worksheet electricity. I had hoped we might give it a little more responsibility.

The interesting part is what you do next.

I spent years consulting with executives and professionals who needed mathematics in their work. Many of the methods I’m building into LogNormal grew out of that experience.

An impressive-looking expression still has to account for itself. What is this term doing? Why that transformation? What happens if we start somewhere else?

Those are useful questions. Especially the last one.

There’s something satisfying about approaching the same problem from another direction and finding that everything still holds. You haven’t guessed what somebody wanted. You’ve worked out what the mathematics permits.

It can be surprisingly accommodating.

So I started moving things around.

In LogNormal, a learner can inspect an argument, find the step that fails, and repair it. They can construct their own reasoning, with different valid paths accepted in supported exercises. Then they can put the mathematics to work somewhere that responds to their decisions.

Audit. Articulate. Apply.

The names are orderly. There are also lasers.

I’m interested in the machinery underneath both: what changes when you make a different decision, how a problem rebuilds around that decision, and how much more there is to notice once you’re involved.

The mathematical rules matter enormously. Making the experience stiff and joyless is an entirely separate decision.

I haven’t found a use for that one.

There’s more I want to try.

LogNormal is still growing. More mathematics, more ways to work with it, more places to take it.

I want to build something worth lingering over. Something you return to because you’ve thought of another thing to try.

Not necessarily the thing I had in mind.
